Vallée du Rhône, November
Last November my husband had a congress in the South of France and in the high speed train on the way there he made a lot of pictures for me of the early snowfall in that weekend. I have already made some watercolour paintings using these pictures as my reference, and this time I have chosen a scene that was almost only in shades of white and black with some grey for the sky.
The fallen trees in the corner that is down right were not to be seen without enlarging the reference picture on my screen.
Using watercolours these trees might become too detailed and that was not what I wanted. The small sticks of charcoal that I have used for this drawing are perfect for this scene and I am really happy with the result.

Chapel - foggy weather
The little chapel I have painted in an imaginary winter scene now returns in a November mood.
These days the sky is gray, the leaves have fallen and there is always a slightly foggy atmosphere. The colours of all things outside are darker than usual because of the moist air. Influenced by all that I have made a November painting.
The chapel is standing on the top of the hill and this time I have not changed that.
The fog is thick enough to let the spire fade away a little. Everything is a bit out of focus.
To achieve that I have loaded a brush with clean water and used that to make the shapes I had already painted a little blurred.
The little chapel will be starring in more of these imaginary landscapes when I will try to paint a special atmosphere. One day - later - I want to paint it as it really is and I hope that will not be too much of a disappointment.

Rotterdam in November
On a cold, windy November afternoon we went for a walk in the city of Rotterdam. As this was a family reunion, we walked in the area just south of the river, partly between the earliest harbors that lay in the inhabited area now.
Crossing one of those harbors (by bridge) we had this view.
The back-light simplifies what usually is a landscape with too many details into a skyline with only chimneys and cranes as recognizable features.
Of course there was wind, so the water was rippled without much reflections of the buildings, trees or clouds.
The colours were also simplified by the weather conditions, a yellow haze for the sky and some blueish grays for the clouds, river, buildings and trees.
This painting will be a good remembrance to a nice family reunion.
